17 best Universities in Asia
17 Indonesian universities are categorized as best universities in Asian level under International Faculty Review 2009 category organized by Quacquarelli Symonds (QS)/www.topuniversities.com that is located in London, UK. The 1st place is Universitas Gadjah Mada Yogyakarta, 2nd is Institut Pertanian Bogor, followed by Universitas Pasundan (Unpas) Bandung on 3rd.
That was recently revealed by Prof. Didi Turmudzi as Chairman of Indonesian Rector Forum, West Java and Banten area. “There are 406 universities recognized under Asian level. Indonesia has 36 universities both private and public; while 17 of them are chosen as best universities for international faculty review. What pleases us more is the fact that 5 of them are universities from West Java, with 3 of them are located in Bandung, namely Unpas, ITB, and Unpar (Universitas Parahyangan),” he said.
According to Didi who is also Unpas Rector, the 4th-17th place are Universitas Surabaya, Universitas Bina Nusantara, Universitas Diponegoro (Undip), Universitas Indonesia (UI), Universitas Jember, Universitas Airlangga (Unair), Universitas Brawijaya (Unbraw), Universitas Negeri Yogyakarta (UNY), Universitas Katolik Parahyangan (Unpar), Institut Teknologi 10 November Surabaya, Universitas Sebelas Maret, Institut Teknologi Bandung (ITB), Universitas Negeri Padang, and Universitas Sriwijaya (Unsri) respectively.

QS London, Didi added, also announced 36 best Indonesian universities in Asia for academic peer category. The 1st place is UI, ITB, and Unair. In West Java, IPB (ke-4), Unpad (10), Unpar (17), Universitas Maranatha, Unpas (28), and Polban (34) are ranked under this category. “While under papers/faculty category, ITB, IPB, and UI are ranked 1st – 3rd. On 4th place till 23rd place in Central Java are Unpad (7), Unpar (16), and Unpas (22),” he described.
Moreover, several universities in West Java namely UI, IPB, ITB, Unpad, Unpar, and Unpas are ranked under ratio student body/faculty. Meanwhile, under student exchange outbound criteria, the 1st-3rd place are UI, ITB, and Undip simultaneously. Universitas Negeri Padang (4), Universitas Sebelas Maret (5), Unibraw (6), UNY (7), ITS (8), Unsri (10), Unpas (11), Unair (12) dan Ubaya (13) are ranked on 4th – 23rd place.
”Last but not least, under student exchange category, the ranking are ITB (ke-1), Universitas Negeri Padang (2), UI (3), Universitas Sebelas Maret (4), UGM (5), Undip (6), UNY (7), Ubaya (8), ITS (9), Unpas (10), Unair (11) and Unsri (12),” he ended.
