GREEN ECONOMY: University Of Surabaya Won Indonesia Green Award 2012

JAKARTA: In Indonesia, public awareness especially on schools and universities to implement the green economic paradigm is higher so that on the Indonesia Green Award (IGA) 2012, at least 18 schools and four campuses received the awards, for making environmental friendly behavior as part of the education and teaching.

“IGA 2012 which was announced last week becomes special because schools in the regional areas are more advanced in implementing the Green School. Something that is surprising is the activities that are originally centered on the schools are also implemented to the surrounding community,” explained La Tofi as the organizing committee today, Monday (07/16/2012).

His institution needs to continue encouraging all parties to actively develop the environment preservation of Green as Way of Life-oriented mindset and behavior. That’s the reason why The La Tofi School of CSR held an appreciation event of Indonesia Green Awards for the third time.

“From the total of 38 schools that registered, 18 schools deserve to win the Indonesia Green Awards this year, 4 of them are elementary schools in Probolinggo namely SD Negeri Mangunharjo 6; SD Negeri Sukabumi 6; SMP Negeri 4; SMA Negeri 2; and SMK Negeri 1,” said La Tofi.

Other achievement from Probolinggo city is Probolinggo received an award as a Green City well known as the City of Thousand Parks that successfully mobilizes the initiative of the stakeholders.

The same award was also given to Regional Head of Blitar City who develops community based sanitation and creates the good Kampong climate that makes better quality of life of Blitar city residents.

West Kutai District also made great efforts to encourage the mining companies in applying the Green Mining principle so that the environmental damage can be avoided. The Green City was also given to Surakarta city that is able to nurture pro-environmental policies for all development aspects in Surakarta.

Talking about the Green Campus concept, La Tofi explained there were only four universities that are worthy receiving the awards because they have developed an environmental friendly lifestyle within the campus. The four universities are Universitas Islam Indonesia Yogyakarta; Universitas Mercu Buana Jakarta; Universitas Muhammadiyah Yogyakarta; and University of Surabaya.

Awards were also given for the categories of manufacturing, mining companies, agro industry, green forestry, banking, telecommunication companies, hotels, hospitals and for public figures whom are the environment savior in their respective regions of Cilacap, Jakarta, Lombok, and Sulawesi.

La Tofi described that the jury team is chaired by Surna Tjahja Djajadiningrat (Professor at ITB-SMB Environmental Management as well as Honorary Chairman of the Proper Environment Board, Ministry of Environment) to raise the public awareness upon the importance of implementing green economy.

Not just preserving the environment, the green economy confirms the sustainability & improvement of environmental quality and the social justice in the green economy which in many cases are proven in increasing the economic benefits,” described La Tofi.

Therefore, there should be efforts to maintain the productivity of renewable natural resources such as land, fish, and forests. Utilization of renewable natural resources should be carried out under the renewability capacity.

Today’s world needs leaders with ethical, moral, and holistic & global perspective behavior who are able to develop plans, strategies, and implement future human beings in a fair and equitable way which can make the “Earth is for the future together,” he concluded. (sut)
