SURABAYA, KOMPAS - A total of 7,500 participants joined The Green Bike Fest Fun Bike held by Kompas-University of Surabaya on Sunday (22/4). Besides the fun bike, the tree planting event was also held in several locations in Surabaya aims to celebrate the Earth Day.
Before releasing the fun bike participants that should ride the bike approximately 27 kilometer, Soekarwo (Governor of East Java) said that mass sporting activities such as cycling, should be actively encouraged. In fact, these activities not only to make the participants healthy but also protect the environment by keeping them clean and maintained.
“Mass sporting activities should be often organized so it can encourage the society in maintaining their health and fitness. This activity becomes more beneficial because the society was also included to protect the environment through tree planting activity and keep the environment clean by not littering,” said Soekarwo.
On this event, Soekarwo was accompanied by Budiman Tanuredjo (Kompas Newspaper Executive Editor) and Prof. Joniarto Parung (Ubaya Rector). This activity is also held to celebrate the 44th Ubaya Anniversary.
Soekarwo said that the Green Bike Fest event organized by Kompas-Ubaya could also encourage the public interest towards sport, and an understanding of the importance of sport in improving quality of life. Through the mass sporting activities, society could be encouraged to have sportsmanship spirit, high fighting spirit, discipline, and competitive spirit so that creative and innovative individual can be produced.
Budiman Tanuredjo said that every year Kompas-Gramedia regularly organizes a fun bike event in Surabaya. The mission of this activity is to encourage Surabaya citizens to be more aware towards their environment as well as make the body healthy and encourage socialization with other participants.
At the closing session, Tri Rismaharini (Surabaya Mayor) happily received the fun bike participants who have ride the bike for 27 kilometer. She admitted that Surabaya city can be free from flooding during the rainy season because the citizens are aware to keep the environment clean.
Surabaya citizens always keep the Water channel that has been dredged and cleaned up by the Surabaya City Government clean by not littering, especially into the water channel. “The environment must be kept clean and free from the waste, other than that the trees that have been planted should not be cut down so that air pollution can be reduced aims to compensate the heat and air temperature of this city,” she explained. Tri Rismaharini also plants a lot of trees on Ubaya Tenggilis campus and others locations outside the campus. (ETA)
